Fiber Cement on the Cottages Closest to the Beach
Between the Pier and Grand Beach, a cottage wall takes salt spray and blowing sand all summer, then the full push of a nor'easter in the off-season. We recommend James Hardie fiber cement there, because the heavy board stays flat in the wind and will not burn the way vinyl or wood can when the next cottage stands a few feet away.
So close to salt water, the boards go up with stainless or hot-dipped galvanized nails, since plain steel bleeds rust streaks down a painted wall within a few seasons. Ordered with a factory finish, fiber cement also keeps its color on a sun-baked seaward wall far longer than paint brushed on at the house.
